Regular 2018 Sessions

1/11/2017

Good news!  We have secured a regular session at Derby in 2018.  We are sharing a club cluster session with Belper on a Friday evening, every 5 weeks.  This means we get a single group of up to 20 riders with an hour's track time between 20:00 and 22:00 (20 mins on, 20 mins off).  The price will be the same as previous sessions - £15.

On the downside, with only one group we will not have enough track time to run accreditation sessions.  Anyone not already accredited will have to start/complete their accreditation via the public sessions.

I'll be in touch nearer the time to work out the way the first sessions will run in detail.

CRASHING

As we had a pile-up at our last event, I thought it worth reminding everyone on the way we should be riding.  This is plagiarised from the web.

Most crashes happen when one rider ‘hooks’ another by moving into their front wheel.  On the track, this

I came across a good (American) guide to riding the track; especially if you have come from a road racing background.  Here's the link www.ridethetrack.com/pdf/trackracing_intro.pdf

Summer Dates for Track

18/6/2017

Dates are now confirmed with Derby Arena.  They are:
  • Saturday 15th July 19:00-21:00
  • Sunday 13th August 12:00-14:00
  • Saturday 23rd September 19:00-21:00

The July and August dates will have an opportunity for unaccredited riders to gain Level 1 and 2 accreditation, September will be for Level 3 accreditation (as long as there are enough people who want this).  As always, there will be a parallel group of more experienced riders for all three sessions.

On 20th May we had two younger riders accredited at Level 2; well done to the Ayers lads.  Thanks to for all the other riders who helped ride in their sessions to make this possible.

Who's up for THIS!  24hr on track

Cyclone 24 is the UK’s only 24 hour track cycling relay challenge event. Offering an experience that is genuinely different, demanding and alluring; a six person team, 24 hour relay cycling challenge where riders face the task of staying awake for 24 hours, battling physical exhaustion and mental fatigue, this really is a challenge of strength, determination and team spirit.

Riders take to the track, 1 rider per team, and then rotate relay fashion continuously throughout the 24 hour period, vying to record the furthest distance covered in the allocated time.

Starting in 2015 Cyclone24 has raised over £60,000 for charity and our Derby event is supporting the Nottingham Children's Hospital who care for more than 60,000 children from across the East Midlands every year.

If you're looking for a unique cycling challenge, cyclone24 is great way to set your own team record on the track at Derby Arena.

Full details and registration forms can be found on the web site http://www.cyclone24.co.uk/derby/

Ride to raise money for your chosen charity or simply to achieve something extraordinary!

Track Newbie Session

1/4/2017

Numbers are down for the session on 8-April due to the start of the summer road racing, and we had a request for a group of track newbies to learn the ropes, so we will have a session to get people to Level 2 accreditation on 8th April.  This will be alongside the session for more experienced track riders (Level 3 or above).  You need no previous track experience for this session, but you do need to be a competent road cyclist, capable of riding in a group, with cleats and able to maintain a pace of about 15 mph.

Session starts on track at 19:00 thru to 21:00 on Saturday 8th April at Derby Arena. You'll need to get there and be fully ready by 18:50 for a briefing.  If you need to hire bikes you can do that on the day from the front desk (bike £12.80, shoes £5.90 if yours don't have Look Keo cleats).  Payment for the session is £15 (cash please) to me once you are inside the velodrome.

Email me, TrackSec@rockinghamforestwheelers.org.uk if you are interested.

See further down this blog page (filter on the 'Starting Track' category on the right) for more information about accreditation and see our Track front page for track riding in general.

I've managed to get a few dates sorted for the following few months.  All at Derby Arena as usual, and most in the Saturday 19:00 to 21:00 slot.  These will be slanted more towards the experienced riders, with some

Madison

I thought I would share with you my experience today at the track.  I was on some Madison training, arranged by the LVRC (for 'veterans' of over 40 - I easily qualify!).  In case you aren't sure, Madison is the track discipline where teams of two race together against other teams on track.  There can be as many as a dozen teams of two on at the same time.  In each team, one of the riders is riding hard and racing, the other

Next Track Dates Open

3/1/2017

The next two track dates at Derby are open for bookings; in fact the first on 21st Jan at 19:00-21:00 is already half full, with all the places in the Experienced stream already filled.

That leaves an Accreditation stream aimed at those who have Level 1 and are looking for Level 2, and those who are confident in their ability to go straight  to level 2 (MUST be experienced in riding in a bunch, very used to cleats and confident).  If you want to get involved, contact Steve.

The next session follows quickly afterwards, on Sat 11th Feb, 19:00-21:00.  I want this to have 2 Experienced streams, as we now have enough riders at that level interested in riding.  One of these streams will build race skills, the other some less competitive (but just as exhausting!) exercises.  If you are Level 3 accredited or above and want to come along, again let Steve know.
