Spring Series - 4-May-2016 Results and Report

5/5/2016

After last week’s club time trial when only twelve riders ventured out in worsening conditions of sleet, rain, thunder and deepening darkness, that felt like winter, tonight’s bright sunlight and blue sky was like summer even if still a little cool in the early May setting-sun and southerly breeze. This time twenty-one riders took on the valley in conditions so different that those who rode last week were anything from
ninety seconds to three minutes faster.

Fastest ride on the night 23:43 was by Paul Beattie, riding very strongly after his tiring efforts over the weekend in the Rockingham Forest Wheelers 2 Day Road Race. Next was Peter Kucak, who we have not seen so much of recently, recording 24:17 and Nathan Joyce, probably the most impressive ride, in only his third time trial, improving again to 24:55, this while riding his standard drop bar road bike, in comparison to Paul and Peter on their out and out time trial machines. Harry Freeman, just 16 years, using his road bike with aero bars attached, finished in 26:02, just 2 seconds shy of his best done at this year’s first club ten evening on the 13th April. He’s definitely stepped up the pace from last year and his sure to be breaking into the next minute soon. Harry’s fellow 16 years old, Matt Lonergan was below his best tonight on 26:53 but still a promising ride. Guest rider James Smart from Numplumz was pleased to put in a personal best in 25:12, James one of the regular visiting party of Numplumzers joining us in the after race meal.

Since introducing better course signing last year, we have now begun to marshal and sign the club Tens to a proper Cycling Time Trials standard, getting everyone who enjoys the Wednesday evenings involved to share in all the jobs. It definitely feels much better out on the course, bringing the attention of drivers to the event and protection to the riders at key points on the course, and much better for first timers to find their way around the ten miles.

I think it also it brings us together as a club with all the different jobs it takes to enjoy our sport and protect it for the future.  Many thanks to everybody for supporting this and long may it continue.
