Club & GHS 9.5 mile, 06-July-2016 Results and Report

On a quiet, warm night six youngsters competed in the local final of the GHS national time trial competition for under sixteen’s hosted by us on an amended version of the club NC14 course. Shortened from its usual 9.9 miles to about
9.5 miles, the Valley course was started and finished either side of the (still) closed road in Medbourne.  But even the six starters for the GHS bettered the turnout for the club event. However the evening clashed with NCRA closed circuit races at the Rockingham Raceway where several regular club TT competitors were competing. Daniel Leverton, Pete Bradshaw, Scott McCann and Paul Beattie, from eight Rocko’s racing on the evening, finished fifth, sixth, twelfth and nineteenth respectively in the third’s and fourth’s category scratch race.

In the GHS event local Welland Valley CC star Joshua van Nierop produced the fastest time, doing a very quick 22:45, a good margin ahead of David Norman of Fenland Clarion CC’s 23:18. The only young woman riding was Fenland’s Mia Purnell who did 27:56.

With some fast guys missing and only five entries the club TT was ‘won’ by Simon Beesley (with another improvement in pace) in 24:12 from Harry Freeman at 24:53, both using road bikes with tri-bars.  Sixty years plus veteran John Dainty, going pretty well this year, was third fastest, doing 26:26, almost 20 seconds ahead of Terry Green (two years senior to John) and ahead of fifth fastest but not least, and relatively young (sixty two years) veteran Nigel Cook, doing 31:29 (standard road bike).
It was quiet at the Clubhouse too, maybe some were distracted by the evening’s other sport events including the Wales/Portugal Euro match.

I think the lesson is, if you are after gaining club TT championship points, ride as many of the club events as you can, whatever else is going on, and whatever the weather conditions...
