DASH 29.8.18

30/8/2018

We had a good turnout of 20 riders for the penultimate TT of the season; a short course of 2.8 miles from Ashley to Middleton.
Warren Drew (Rapha CC) made best time of 6:10, with Matt Lonergan (RFW) coming in a close second with 6:17, followed by Julian Freeman (RFW) in 6:24.
Fastest lady rider and also fastest Road bike was Caroline Hewitt (Velo Elite) with 7:08.
It was also good to see several riders who do not usually ride a full TT ‘having a go’. Surely that is what club riding is all about.
As might be expected with such a short course, timings were very close. Just over 2 ½ minutes covered the whole field. Well done to everyone who took part and my usual thanks to time keepers and helpers.
Our last Dash will be next week, with the Hill Climb to close the season on Sunday 9thSeptember.

This week’s photo shows riders lining up for the start as the sun sinks into the west.

Summer Series 22.8.18

The last of our 10 mile Summer Series time trials attracted decent weather, though the evenings are closing in and light was falling by the time the last of the 14 riders came home.
Fabos Young (Velo Elite) was the fastest rider by a significant margin, posting 21:55 to second-place Julian Freeman’s (RFW) 25:27, while Gary Hewitt (Velo Elite) made third place with 25:55 and was the fastest road bike.
It was good to see a couple of women riders. Caroline Hewitt (Velo Elite) rode to 27:55, while Joanne Lee made 29:18.
Timings were generally fairly tight and most riders got in under 30 minutes.
Our season finishes with two 3 mile Dashes and the inter-club hill climb over Neville Holt completes the year on 9thSeptember.

Our photo this week shows Fabos Young making it look easy as he crosses the finishing line.

Summer Series 15.8.18

The traffic light gremlin decided to put temporary lights exactly where our start / finish area is normally situated and we therefore had to split the start and finish, with a slightly shortened course. A windy evening meant that it was a struggle up to the Ashley turn, but a good tailwind from there on.
From a field of fourteen riders Graeme Hall (RFW) narrowly beat Paul Beattie (RFW) by 11 seconds, with Ian Day coming in a further 21 seconds adrift.
Arthur Bourlet (RFW) just managed to beat the 30 minute barrier, while Mike Harvey (RFW) on a fixie was 34 seconds over.
Due to an expression of interest I have added the Vets. Standard timing to this set of results. These work in a counter-intuitive way to compare riders to the ‘standard time’ for their age. A plus time means that you are faster than your standard and vice versa.
It’s the last of the Tens next week before we finish with a couple of Dashes and the Hill Climb.
My usual thanks go to all race officials and helpers.

My photo this week shows Arthur Bourlet demonstrating that you’re never too old to ride a time trial.

Summer Series 8.8.18

Somewhat cooler weather seems to have brought out the riders. We had a field of 19 this week; the largest number since mid-April.
Graeme Hall (RFW) finished in 23:38, narrowly beating Paul Beattie (RFW), who posted 23:42. Phil Earl (RFW), riding a road bike with Tri bars came third with 24:29 – not bad going.
The fastest pure road bike rider was Peter Kucak (RFW), finishing in 27:31.
Paul Wallace had another go on his mountain bike but, sadly, didn’t manage to finish.
Thirteen year-old Huw Wilson (RFW 2ndclaim) rode number 14 and came in 14th, not quite managing to beat the 30 minute mark.

Special thanks go to Peter Nix, who ran the event for me this week and still managed to ride.
My usual thanks go to all time keepers, marshals and helpers. It couldn’t happen without you.

Our photo this week shows Graeme Hall pushing hard for the line.

There was quite a good turnout of riders for the first of our ‘early starts’ in this final series of the year, though we did struggle for marshals.
Graeme Hall (RFW) was fastest with 23:56, beating second place Lawrence Cox (WVCC) by over a minute. Julian Freeman came in a gallant third with 25:05.
Our guest, Lonneke Kertzman (University of St Andrews Tri Club), borrowed her grandpa’s steel Peugeot and rode her first TT to put in a time of 28:50. Paul Wallace (unattached) was rash enough to ride a mountain bike to a valiant time of 33:52.

My usual thanks to everyone who was roped in to help.

Our Photo this week shows Peter Nix crossing the line in 27:27. Not bad for an ‘old-un’.
