End of Season Dash 1 - 30.8.17

31/8/2017

After a rather rainy day the evening turned out fine and sunny, though we still had only eleven riders for our 2.8 mile Dash. In some ways, this is harder than the usual Club 10, as it is eyeballs-out all the way.
Phil Earl (RFW) came in first with a creditable 6:20, closely followed by seventeen year old Matthew Lonergan (RFW) in 6:22. Steve Wickham and Tim Eaton (both RFW) were the remaining riders to come in under 7 minutes.
Next week is our last TT of the season and will be another Dash. Extra points will be awarded for fancy dress – not sure how this will work but it should be fun.
My usual thanks go to all race officials and helpers.

Summer Series Club 10  23.8.17

This was the last of our Summer Series ‘Tens’ and the weather smiled on us. Fifteen riders signed on, with most being RFW members.
Hans Van Nierop (WVCC) posted the fastest time of the day, coming in over three minutes ahead of second place Paul Furnell (RFW). Tim Eaton was third, finishing a further nine seconds slower.
Neil Howarth (RFW) was delighted to achieve a personal best for the year and Millie Van Nierop (WVCC) was the last to come in under thirty minutes.
There are only our two ‘Dashes’ to come before the season winds up with our Inter-Club Hill Climb on 10.9.17.
My usual thanks go to all race officials and helpers. Well done to all riders.

After a warm and sunny day, the evening turned out fine, though with a strong breeze. We rather expected a large turnout but, in the event, eleven riders lined up at the start.
Fabos Young (Wellingborough Cycles RT) rather wanted to break the course record but a combination of the wind and slowing for a horse on the course prevented him. However, he still finished in 22:08, over two minutes ahead of Phil Earl (RFW), who was baulked by a tractor, in 24:59 and Julian Freeman (RFW) in 25:12.
Eighteen year-old Jos Kertzman (Bath CC) rode his grandfather’s steel Peugeot to 26:53, while Michael Church (RFW) on his newly-restored Mercian single speed struggled a bit to finish in 33:18. Let’s say it’s down to teething troubles.
Our only woman rider, Haddi Conant (RFW), having ridden over from Kings Cliffe, was hampered by a broken gear lever but still managed 30:30.
Last week is the final ‘Ten’, so let’s hope for decent weather and a good turnout. My thanks, as usual, go to all helpers and race officials.

I've included a photo of Julian making a dash for the finish.

Summer Series '10'   9.8.17

With rain threatening we had only eight riders for this week’s time trial. Perhaps everyone was on holiday. No road works this week, so we were back on the usual full valley circuit.
Conditions did not encourage low times and most people fell well short of their personal bests.
Paul Beattie (RFW) posted best time of the day, with 24:03. David Wilson (WVCC) came in next with 26:11 and 17 year old Thomas Spain (Kings Cliffe Flyers) was third with 27:13.
A special mention must go to Arthur Bourlet who, at the age of 73 keeps soldiering on. I hope I’m as fit at that age.
There are only two more events in this series before we wind up the season with a couple of Dashes and the Inter-Club hill climb with Kettering CC.
My usual thanks go to our time keeper and race officials.

Most people must be on holiday, as we only had six riders for our evening 10 this week. There were traffic lights in Drayton, so we had to split the start and finish either side of the road works, making a course of 9.5 miles. The weather was quite blustery with the threat of drizzle in the air, making for rather challenging conditions.
Paul Beattie (RFW) was significantly the fastest rider, with a time of 23:14. The next three riders came in within the 25 minute mark.
My usual thanks to all race officials and marshals.
